Tijdens de Disney Investor Day 2020 op 11 december is definitief bekendgemaakt dat er onder de nieuwe categorie Star films en series voor volwassenen aan zitten te komen op Disney+, een langverwachte toevoeging aan het aanbod. Daar hangt echter wel een prijskaartje aan, want de kosten van een abonnement op de streamingdienst gaan omhoog van €6.99 per maand of €69.99 per jaar naar €8.99 per maand of €89.99 per jaar. De wijzigingen in Disney+ gaan op dinsdag 23 februari 2021 in.
Wat is Star op Disney+?
Op dit moment kun je via Disney+ nog voornamelijk kijken naar films en series die gericht zijn op kinderen of op vermaak voor de hele familie. De beschikbare categorieën op de streamingdienst zijn tot dusver Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars en National Geographic. Star moet daar verandering in brengen.
Star krijg 1.000 nieuwe films en series in het eerste jaar
Star wordt een zesde categorie op de streamingdienst met een eigen pagina binnen het platform en een volledig nieuwe collectie van exclusieve Originals en locatie producties. In totaal worden er 1.000 unieke films en series onder het Star merk toegevoegd in het eerste jaar op de streamingdienst.
Verder plant Disney+ de toevoeging van meer dan 60 gloednieuwe Originals van Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic en Star. Daarnaast worden er lokale producties gecreëerd die gericht moeten zijn op een meer volwassen publiek
Ouderlijk toezicht
Wat van belang is om te weten, is dat Disney+ ervoor zal zorgen dat het niet voor iedereen mogelijk is om titels in de categorie Star te bekijken. Met ouderlijk toezicht kun je instellen dat bepaalde profielen films en series met leeftijdsbegrenzing niet kunnen bekijken. Daarnaast wordt het mogelijk om profielen met toegang tot volwassen content te beschermen met een PIN code.
Wanneer verschijnt de nieuwe categorie Star op Disney+?
Vanaf 23 februari 2021 zal de categorie Star worden gelanceerd op Disney+ in Canada, Australië, Nieuw Zeeland, Verenigd Koninkrijk, Europa, Noorwegen, Denemarken, Zweden, Zwitserland en Singapore. Daarna volgen Oost-Europa, Zuid-Korea, Japan en Hong Kong later in 2021.
Welke films en series worden er nieuw in het aanbod verwacht?
Er zullen in het eerste jaar welgeteld 1.000 nieuwe films en series voor volwassenen aan de categorie Star worden toegevoegd. Dat wordt een combinatie van lokale producties en titels van Disney Television Studios, ABC Signature, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, Touchstone en meer.
Voorbeelden van de enorme hoeveelheid aan films en series die onder deze productiemaatschappijen vallen vind je in de lijst hieronder, waarvan een klein deel al op Disney+ te zien is. Of ook elke titel uit deze lijst naar de streamingdienst kan komen is afhankelijk van de beschikbaarheid van uitzendrechten per land. Het overzicht geeft echter wel een inzicht in een groot deel van de films en series die direct bij de lancering naar Disney+ Star kunnen komen. Een paar grote namen die je misschien kent zijn The Americans, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Scrubs, Fargo, Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, Lost, Modern Family, 24, Homeland, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, The Good Doctor, Scandal, Futurama, Desperate Housewives, Revenge, Body of Proof, Gran Hotel, Dynasty, Deadpool, The Martian, Die Hard, Hoe Tem Je Een Draak, Life of Pi, The Day After Tomorrow, The Revenant, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Cast Away, Kingsman, Gone Girl en nog heel veel meer.
Wat overigens opvallend is, is dat een aantal van de bovenstaande titels inderdaad eind december nog verwijderd zullen worden van de streamingdiensten waar ze nu te zien zijn. Zo zien we in het verdwijnsein van Netflix in december dat Sons of Anarchy en Gran Hotel niet worden meegenomen naar 2020 en heeft het verdwijnsein van Amazon Prime Video in december onder andere aangekondigd Body of Proof te verwijderen. Overigens vind je op Streamwijzer ook de eerste bevestigde films en series op Disney+ Star.

Disney+ wordt duurder, maar wat is de nieuwe prijs?
Vanaf 23 februari 2021 is een maandelijks opzegbaar abonnement €8.99 per maand, terwijl de prijs van een jaarabonnement naar €89.99 per jaar zal gaan. In ruil voor deze prijsverhoging krijg je echter wel toegang tot heel wat nieuwe films en series voor volwassenen.
Als huidige abonnee betaal je nog tot een half jaar na het invoeren van de prijsverhoging de oude lagere prijs, terwijl nieuwe abonnees direct de vernieuwde hogere prijs gaan betalen. Ga dus direct naar Disney+ om nu nog een goedkoper abonnement af te sluiten voor de oude prijs.
